Historians Linda Newson and Susie Minchin have found information about the life of recently arrived captives by studying the accounting books of some slave traders who operated in Cartagena during the seventeenth century. These books survive in Inquisition archives in Lima, Peru, and they provide information about the slave traders' expenses in lodgings, food and medicine.
